The ink can vary, from materials like titanium dioxide to carbon black. Most are based on carbon pigments.

When choosing a studio, be sure to pick a properly equipped and hygienic place. Using sterile needles and ink as well as gloves to avoid cross contamination, is crucial for any reputable studio or artist because tattooing can carry health risks. These include infections and allergic reactions. Also diseases may be transmitted if instruments are used on multiple people without being sterilized.
